Brazil - Don Bosco, Rio de Janerio
The van Kesteren Foundation has supported a school founded by The Salesians of Don Bosco in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro for several years. Project Jacarezinho is a school which serves a large population of some of the poorest children in the city and plays a vital role not only in education, but also as a centre for the whole community.
The Salesians of Don Bosco is a Roman Catholic religious institute founded in the late nineteenth century by Saint John Bosco to help poor children during the Industrial Revolution. The Don Bosco projects throughout the World help children from all backgrounds and are not restricted by religion.
Fr Toni Rogger, based at the Don Bosco Jugendhilfe Weltweit in Beromuster in Switzerland, is responsible for fund raising for Don Bosco projects in many countries and introduced the project to the van Kesteren Foundation.
Gerard van Kesteren is responsible for contact with the project.
