Cuba - Don Bosco, Old Havana
The Salesians arrived in Cuba in 1917 and established 8 Schools and 3 Vocational Training Centres. All of these properties were ‘taken away’ by the Communist Revolution in 1961. Today, the Salesians have 5 locations: two in the capital of Havana and one each in Camaguey, Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba. These locations are all properties of the Salesians of Don Bosco and are registered accordingly.
Since 2010, a political openness has developed and the Salesians of Don Bosco have been authorised to offer education courses and classes. The Salesian Centre in Old Havana, Iglesia Maria Auxiliadora, is an important Centre, but the building is in very bad condition and needs complete renovation, rebuilding and development while retaining the original façade and fitting in with the surrounding area.
The van Kesteren Foundation is fully funding the refurbishment/construction of this building which will provide educational courses in languages (English, French, German and Italian), Computer Studies, Vocational Training, Music, Art, Marketing, Family workshops etc., These courses are not available through the local education system and are in high demand in this poor area of Cuba.
Gerard van Kesteren is the contact for this project within the van Kesteren Foundation.
