Kenya: Don Bosco - Agricultural Training and Youth Employment
Youth unemployment in Kenya is a huge problem. In response, the Don Bosco Development office Nairobi, with funding by Don Bosco Jugendhilfe Weltweit Switzerland, has developed an agricultural training project to produce Avocados and Macadamias and then bring the produce to market. Production is across two locations; Nzaikoni, which is an area found in Machakos county and is 76.6km from Nairobi city and Nakuru in Kabazi, on the north shore of Lake Nakuru, 153 km northwest of Nairobi. The project is split into two phases across 5 years and will train a total of approximately 800 young people. The first phase will distribute 25,000 avocado seedlings and the second phase will distribute 7,500 Macadamia seedlings to the students. Training will be provided by the Kenyan Government Agricultural office and supervision will be provided throughout the project by Don Bosco Development office Nairobi. The project has been received with a lot of gratitude in the two areas and the young people have committed themselves to take personal care of the seedling to maturity and beyond owing to the potential that the project has in lifting them out of poverty.
